Classification Of Ribbons

Printers from Japanese brands utilize edge-pressure print heads and edge-pressure ribbons to achieve high-quality printing. The use of a good ribbon is crucial as it not only protects the print head but also ensures the precise transfer of the desired effect onto paper, preventing any smudging or detachment. Carbon ribbons, which are commonly used in these printers, can be classified into three types based on their materials.

The first type is wax-based carbon ribbons, which primarily consist of wax and carbon black. These ribbons are often black in color and are coated with wax materials. They are more economical and cost-effective compared to other types. Wax-based ribbons are typically used for printing on single-stream paper and work best when paired with materials that have a slightly uneven surface texture. However, they are not suitable for printing on smooth, mirror-like materials such as PT (polytetrafluoroethylene). Despite this limitation, wax-based ribbons dominate the market, accounting for approximately 70% of the market share. They are commonly used for printing large paper labels using general print heads.

In cases where printed data needs to withstand solvents and high temperatures, or when printing on chemical product packaging or heating parts of electrical appliances, a different type of ribbon is required. Resin-based ribbons are recommended in such scenarios as their composition can fulfill these specific requirements. However, they tend to be more expensive compared to wax-based ribbons. It is important to note that achieving optimal printing results with resin-based ribbons still depends on the compatibility between the ribbon and the paper or printing media used.

To summarize, selecting the right type of ribbon is essential for Japanese brand printers to ensure high-quality printing results. While wax-based ribbons are more affordable and suitable for general purposes, resin-based ribbons are necessary for applications that require resistance to solvents, high temperatures, or specific chemical products. The choice of ribbon should be made in consideration of the printing materials and desired outcomes to achieve the desired level of printing excellence.

Mixed-base ribbons are widely used in various industries due to their versatility and superior performance. These ribbons consist of a combination of wax and resin, with the mixing ratio tailored to specific requirements. They are particularly suitable for materials with smooth surfaces and products that demand strict surface quality.

One common application of mixed-base ribbons is in the labeling of everyday consumer products. These ribbons offer the advantages of both wax and resin, resulting in high-quality prints on a variety of surfaces. To enhance visibility and allow for easy identification of internal packaging materials, single continuous bags with one side transparent and the other side white are often used. Alternatively, a white background can be partially printed on the bag to achieve a clearer printing effect.

For optimal printing results on P bags, it is recommended to use high-quality resin-based ribbons. Although cheaper alternatives may seem appealing, it is important not to compromise on ribbon quality. Inferior ribbons can negatively impact the lifespan of printers and even damage the print head. Therefore, investing in high-quality ribbons outweighs any short-term cost savings.

In summary, mixed-base ribbons offer a versatile and effective solution for a range of printing needs. Whether it's labeling consumer products or ensuring clear prints on P bags, choosing the right ribbon is crucial for achieving the desired results and protecting the longevity of printing equipment.
